East Asian Translation
This satellite brings together colleagues researching and working with the translation of East Asian languages across the School of Languages, Cultures and Societies:
Dr Martin Ward, Dr Cuie Xu, Austin Woerner, and PhD candidate Lu Yuan
This satellite seeks to advance and disseminate research into the translation of East Asian languages.
Mediating between ‘East’ and ‘West’, we consider different cultures, political systems, contexts, views on theory, methodologies and more as we work with Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. Our particular areas of interest include translation pedagogy, children’s books, online literature, music, theatre, game translation and localisation, media and journalism, graphic novels, popular science, Japanese anime, machine translation and human translation, Korean films, Chinese political discourse, literary translation.
If you are interested in joining the group, please contact Dr Martin Ward (m.s.ward@leeds.ac.uk)
We address a broad range of research questions, such as:
- Challenges in Machine Translation
- Challenges in translating Korean films
- Challenges in translating Children’s books
- Approaches to Translating Popular Science (based on an analysis of student translation project)
- What can we learn from a good piece of human translation?
- Challenges in Teaching translation (Pedagogical research) (Academic writing ability, critical thinking ability, the language (e.g., register) used in target culture, the command of the TL grammar and vocabulary, (student’s) writing skills, comprehension of ST, research to the ST.)

The Poetry Translation Lab @ Leeds
The Poetry Translation Lab @ Leeds creates a space for students and staff to experience of the pleasures of poetry by translating it together. We have weekly, informal meetings over lunch or afternoon tea in the LUU lounge (specific times are determined week-to-week by attendees) and display our translations on posters around campus, each accompanied by notes from our discussion at leedspoetrytranslationlab.wordpress.com. Speakers of all languages are welcome to attend! Check the website or our Instagram for updates on upcoming meeting times.
For more information contact: Austin Woerner.
